Puerto Rico's Coffee Culture
“Quieres un cafecito? (Would you like a little coffee?) is a typical welcome when you visit a Puerto Rican home. Mornings, in Puerto Rico have smelled of coffee for centuries. The typical morning ritual in Puerto Rican households include one or two cups of coffee before leaving the house, an additional cup of coffee at mid morning, another cup after lunch, one at mid afternoon and another after dinner. With sugar or without, with milk or black, big cup or small cup... we love our coffee!
Coffee is such an important element in Puerto Rican society, that many will proudly let you know they were fed coffee as babies. Most will tell you their parents' or grandparents' coffee is the best in the world. People meet regularly at different times during the day at panaderías (Puerto Rican style bakeries) to discuss local politics and news over a cup of coffee and toast. In the mountains, some homes have coffee bushes in their backyard, so when they say “home made coffee” they literally mean home made!
So... would you like a cafecito? In the morning, afternoon or evening, enjoy a cup of coffee and immerse yourself in our Island's way of life.
